Brief Project Description

The Crete-Attica HVDC Interconnection project includes the following

AC/DC converter stations

  • Attica converter station: Construction of a new AC/DC converter station with a rated power of 1000MW (2 x 500 MW), voltage up to 500kV, operating as a symmetrical bipole, located near the Koumoundourou EHV substation.
  • Crete converter station: Construction of a new AC/DC converter station with a rated power of 1000MW (2 x 500 MW), voltage up to 500kV, operating as a symmetrical bipole, located near Damasta, Crete.

Underground/submarine DC line from the Attica converter station to the Crete converter station

  • 2 underground HVDC cables, approximately 32 km long, with a rated power of 1000ΜW, from the Attica converter station to the Megara beach.
  • An underground/submarine MVDC cable from the Attica converter station to the Megara beach with an underground cable and from the Megara beach to the small island of Stachtoroi electrode station with a submarine cable.
  • 2 submarine HVDC cables, approximately 328km long, with a rated power of 1000 MW in bipolar operation, from the Megara beach (Attica) to the Korakia beach (Crete).

2 underground HVDC cables (250 m long, 1000 MW), from the Korakia beach to the Korakia terminal station.

Crete HV transmission system infrastructure

  • Construction of the Terminal Transition Station at Korakia for the transition of the underground DC cable to overhead DC line.
  • Construction of a new 150 KV Coupling Substation (GIS) for the connection of the AC/DC Converter Station to the AC 150 KV Crete system.
  • Construction/Upgrade of 150 KV Transmission Lines on Crete.

Electrode stations

  • Attica side electrode station: Construction of an electrode station on the small island of Stachtoroi.
  • Crete side electrode station: Construction of an electrode station on Korakia, Crete.
